What a Retinal Exam Can Catch Before You Notice Symptoms

By Laurie J. Larson, OD · 5 min read · Green Bay, WI

The retina is the thin, light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It is also one of the only places in the body where a doctor can see blood vessels and nerve tissue directly, which is why a retinal exam reveals so much.

Conditions a retinal exam can detect

  • Diabetic retinopathy, damage to retinal blood vessels from diabetes
  • Glaucoma, through changes in the optic nerve
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Retinal holes, tears and detachments
  • Signs of high blood pressure

Why early detection matters

Many of these conditions develop slowly and painlessly. By the time vision changes, damage may already be done. Finding changes early gives you more options and a better chance of protecting your sight.

If you have diabetes

People with diabetes are encouraged to have a dilated retinal exam every year, even if vision seems fine. Results can be shared with your primary care doctor to support your overall care.

Call right away if

  • You suddenly see many new floaters
  • You notice flashes of light
  • A shadow or curtain appears over part of your vision
