What Is OptiLight? IPL Dry Eye Treatment Explained

By Laurie J. Larson, OD · 5 min read · Green Bay, WI

OptiLight by Lumenis is an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment for dry eye disease caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). It is coming to Eye See Eye and Facial Wellness in Green Bay in late November 2026.

The problem it treats

Your tears have three layers: mucus, water and oil. The oil layer, made by the meibomian glands in your eyelids, keeps tears from evaporating. When those glands become blocked or inflamed, tears break up too fast. The result is dryness, burning, redness, a gritty feeling and vision that fluctuates through the day. MGD is one of the most common causes of dry eye.

How OptiLight works

OptiLight delivers precise pulses of light to the skin below the eyes. The light helps reduce inflammation and the abnormal blood vessels that feed it, which supports healthier gland function. It is FDA-approved to improve the signs of dry eye disease due to MGD in adults.

What a session feels like

  • Your eyes are covered with protective shields
  • A cooling gel goes on the treatment area
  • You feel a quick warm snap with each pulse
  • The session takes about 15 minutes, with no downtime

How many treatments?

A typical plan is a series of four sessions spaced a few weeks apart, often paired with gland expression. Many people notice improvement during the series, with maintenance visits as needed.

Is it right for you?

If you have tried drops, warm compresses and lid scrubs and still struggle, ask about a dry eye evaluation. Dr. Larson will look at your glands and tear film and let you know if OptiLight is a good fit.
